Read MoreIn early 1990‘s a chance meeting at a dinner at a mutual friend’s home in Auckland, between two cricket loving Sri Lankans, Amita Weerakoon and Sunitha Goonetilleke, an idea was born to form a cricket club. That was the birth of the Sri Lankan cricket club. Amita a former Thurstan college player was then playing in the Premier grade for Grafton CC , and Sunitha who had arrived in NZ in 1987 . having re-kindled his love of cricket after a 10 year gap ,was playing 4th grade cricket for Kumeu CC.
In 1994 Sri Lankan cricket Club was formally registered as a club, The primary purpose was to provide the Sri Lankans domiciled in Auckland an opportunity to enjoy their favorite outdoor game in a typical Sri Lankan environment and also to provide the non Sri Lankans the opportunity to experience the Sri Lankan unique Cricketing culture. Having said that, we did not confine our club to just Sri lankans or to any particular ethnic group, it was open to all, and many Kiwi European, Maori, South African and Indian players have played for the club.
SLCC Auckland has won the first championship in 1995.
